The village was covered in fog. It made my approach to the temple easier because while there were no armed guards, there were occasionally those who would patrol about making sure there was nothing or no one out of place. But in the fog, I realized that the temple was not dark at all. There were great torches burning around it, an assembly of robed priests and priestesses. Something was going on in the temple.
I crept up towards the doors and tried to open them but found them locked. Instead, I crept around the side. There were windows but they were much higher than I could reach. Instead, I tried to listen. I had to hear whatever was going on in there for myself.
At first, it was difficult to hear anything. But the longer I waited, the more voices I began to hear.
"We will begin. There's a demon of Mortua in this child. It must be drawn out, brothers and sisters. I thank you for coming, I know I did not give much time. But darkness approaches, we cannot have one of necromancy. You do know the tenants, you do know what we must do if we cannot draw this beast out of this girl."
There was a unison where all of them said amen, a strange and chilling feeling. I didn't know what they were going to do but all I could do was simply try to follow the footsteps on the wooden floors of the temple to figure out where they were going. But it didn't take much to guess. I could hear a door open, the hinges creaking and then I could hear Amia, screaming âNo!â.
Then, chanting, in a language I did not know, a language I'd never heard. The sound of sparks. Even being outside I could see flashes from within the temple. I didn't know what they were doing, I just could hear her screaming, crying out in anguish and pain. What holiness was this? My goddess gives life to that which is dead but their goddess, apparently, calls for pain and suffering. Who would serve a goddess like that? I doubt my mother or father ever knew the potential evil of Etha. It made no matter, I couldn't get to her. Though, I tried. I tried to go back to the door and force them open but there was no way I was going to get this place open to me. Then the moment I appeared to have no doubt the priest and all the others that were there would chase me away or worse. It killed me. I felt like someone was tearing into my chest and with every passing moment I felt the greater, stronger, and more focused energy growing in my mind. Something, somewhere, made me feel like this would work out. I just didn't know how.
I returned home that night and lay down on the floor. The room was still in disarray, but I knew she was not comfortable and I would not be comfortable either.
